Delaware is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The state is the second smallest in area after Rhode Island. Its population is 45th in the country making it 6th in population density. Delaware's largest city is Wilmington and its capital is Dover. It was admitted to the Union on December 7th 1787. The state of Delaware is a plain with the lowest mean elevation of any of the states. Most of the state is a transition zone between the humid subtropical climate and a continental climate. The nearby ocean keeps the climate temperate. There are regions along the cost that are flat and sandy and other parts of the state are swampy.
The Dutch were the first to establish settlements in Delaware but they were forced out in 1664 by the British. Delaware was the first state to ratify the new United States Constitution on December 7th, 1787. The Dover Air Force Base is one of the largest in the country and is a major employer in Delaware. The Delaware Memorial Bridge is the second longest twin span suspension bridge in the world. Delaware is also home to the World Championship Punkin Chunkin. Rehoboth Beach is “The Nation's Summer Capital” due to all of the Washington residents who visit the beaches there.
