All About Michigan

With the introduction of the automobile industry at the beginning of the 1900s, Michigan's economy went under massive changes. From the day that Henry Ford founded his first automotive plant in Highland Park, the transportation industry started to open up new possibilities. Just like the steamship and railroad before it, the automobile and auto-bus would soon revolutionize public transportation, as well as private life by providing an easy and affordable way to visit friends, go to work, or even to the movies.

With new jobs popping up in Detroit, many new immigrants began to come from both eastern and southern Europe, as well as newcomers from around the country; both black and white. By 1910, Detroit was the fourth largest in the United States. With so many new residents, housing grew scarce. The city's population was growing faster then the market could keep up.

During the Great Northern Migration, many blacks moved to Detroit, as they knew that they could find good work there. After a while, the Detroit population gradually became more and more diverse. African Americans living in Detroit started many pop music genres and bands and trends, like Motown Sound in the 1960s, led by many different singers and groups.

The second largest city in Michigan, Grand Rapids, is still a main automobile manufacturing site. With large sources of lumber readily available, Grand Rapids used to be known for its furniture since 1838, but its furniture industry has since declined during the 20th century with new major regional and international manufacturers.
