Kentucky Facts

On the border of the Midwest, Kentucky is surrounded by seven states; West Virginia to the east, Virginia to its southeast, Tennessee right underneath, Missouri to the west, Illinois and Indiana to the northwest, and Ohio to the northeast. Only two others, Missouri and Tennessee, are bordered by more states than Kentucky.

Even though its northern border is made up of the great Ohio River and its west by the Mississippi, the official border is still where the rivers existed in 1792, when Kentucky became a state. In several areas the border over crosses the river as travelers may find that by crossing the Ohio River on route US 41, they still remain in Kentucky for another half-mile north. Ellis Park, a horse-racing track was created in this small tract of land.

On its northwest side, Waterworks road makes up the only land border between Indiana and Kentucky. Kentucky is the only surrounded state with a non-contiguous border. In western Kentucky lies Fulton County, which includes a small portion of land, not attached to the main section of Kentucky, created by the New Madrid Earthquake. To get to Fulton County, you actually need to travel through Tennessee.

Even with its odd "jigsaw puzzle" like edges and pieces, Kentucky remains an integral part of our nation from its friendly citizens, to its preserved Southern culture and foods, from bluegrass music to Kentucky Fried Chicken.
