Alabama is a state in the south eastern portion of the United States of America. It ranks 30th of the fifty states in size. In Elmore County north of Montgomery is a meteorite impact crater known as a Wetumpka crater. The impact crater is the place where a 1,000 foot wide meteorite hit the state 80 million years ago. Alabama has a temperate climate with an average temperature of 64 degrees. For the most part the summers are hot and winters are mild.
The southern portion of Alabama reports more thunderstorms than any other region in the United States. Montgomery is the capital of the state and Birmingham is its largest city. The state was admitted to the Union on December 14, 1819. Alabama is an alcohol control state and the state government has the sole right to sell alcohol. Some places to visit when you are in Alabama are Birmingham Astronomical Society, Old State Bank, USS Alabama and Vulcan Park. Visitors can also attend the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic.
